It's with a heavy heart that I say this

but I am pretty sure at this point I quit Google Plus.

This is not the "I'm taking my toys and going home" ranting of a entitled butthurt neckbeard. This is a serious thing, and I've been thinking about it for some time now.

I've been with G+ since the very very very beginning. Since it was "invite only" and you could sneak people in by tagging them in a post. I loved Google Plus. I ate and breathed G+. I didn't get my (at my peak) 25k followers by sitting idly by.

And I've stood with G+ through a lot of the changes. Through the poorly-designed android app, to the scrapping of the black bar across the top, to the "hey, let's make this shit look like Pinterest" two column thing, all the way to this.

I loved my Circles. I curated. I shared. I cross-posted, and looked at my Ripples. We were a better place than Facebook. Facebook was for people you already knew (but sometimes wished you didn't), Twitter was for people you met but didn't really know, and Google Plus was for people you didn't know yet… but really should.

The problem… I suspect… was that Google has never really seemed to care about the people they already had, they've always been more interested in the people that they didn't have yet but wanted to have. They hurt their hardcore userbase so much with the FORCED signup and integration, the hardline name policy, the FORCED YouTube inclusion – all in an attempt to get people who didn't want to use G+ to use it, and almost in defiance of the people who already did.

With this most recent change, they have essentially destroyed the concept of "The Circle", which was one of the core components of G+ and one of the big things that made it stand out from Facebook. Finding your Circles, viewing content by Circle, putting people in Circles – it's gone from the mobile app, and it's damn near hidden from this web interface.

There's a bunch of people on here who I'm going to miss, but anymore it's nearly impossible to find your posts through the flotsam and jetsam of their new design and despicable sorting algorithm. Since I can't use my circles anymore, I'm going to try and namecheck a few of you now:

+Bliss Morgan +Christopher Butler +Sarah Rios +Brittany Constable +Charles Moore +Harold Chester +Franck RABESON +Glenn Rogers +Lexi Gable +Isaac Winters +Jake Kern +Kai Saffron +Steve Kunzer

If any of you (not just those I could find to name) want to join me over on… ugh … Facebook, you are more than welcome to hit me up here:

I hope you keep in touch with  me

Circles are gone? I only use mobile….I don't see a change.

  3. Cédric Desrochers November 20, 2015 at 8:42 pm #

For the circles in the mobile app you have to go in the settings and check the little square. As for mobile you can go to classic g+ and don't forget the new layout is beta.

You can't filter content by the circle anymore.  Like, I had a "Writer" circle, and I'd click on that and it'd show me only the posts from people in that.  Now, where Circles were, it's the Collections thing, which I don't use and don't have any interest in.

Also, you totally were a person I would've tagged if I'd seen you scrolling through the names, +Angie Person

+Cédric Desrochers And how long before they're gone entirely?  Like Sparks, and "What's Hot" (not that I mourn that) and Games and a dozen other things that G+ has tried and jettisoned in trying to answer the all important question – not "what do our users want?", but "what can attract new users?"

If they remove circles stream I'll be gone too. My biggest grudge is there's no control on the chronological order of the stream.

The Book of Faces, it is. :-/

I started unfriending people on Facebook a while back, and friending / following random cool and interesting looking people… basically treating it the way I would G+… and it's been a lot better.  The platform is as much about the attitude you bring to it and the way you use it as it is who and what is on there.  If there's one good thing I've taken away from Google+, it's not to rely on complacency and do "what the system" wants me to do.

  9. Isaac Winters November 20, 2015 at 9:01 pm #

From what I read, they're listening to feedback about the new G+ and some features that were initially removed are going to be coming back. Just sayin'.
Of course, I understand if you still want to go. Google's constant disregard for their existing users is getting old. Anyway, I might try dusting off my Book O' Faces profile and adding you on there.

Yeah, +Jim Hanson, people are people, and Facebook is as good or bad as you let it be. I liked G+ because I met the people here. If they turned into jerks who couldn't stop spinning their rhetoric, I'd drop them. No harm. No foul.

That's not as easy with Facebook. I've blocked my niece, and I've put my sister-in-law on the restricted list. (Those were fun conversations.) But I've found that the unfollow option has helped keep me sane over there.

Friend request sent… and I think you already accepted. Cool. :)

  11. Harold Chester November 20, 2015 at 9:03 pm #

    FB friend request sent.

You say these words like you have to choose one or the other. I've been using G+ AND Facebook this entire time.

  14. Jim “Danger” Hanson November 20, 2015 at 9:30 pm #

Right, Mike, but people CARE about what I say.

Maybe I haven't got the update yet, because my circles still work….that is a major feature to disable. +Google+ Developers+Google+ say it ain't so.

  17. Sarah Rios November 20, 2015 at 10:06 pm #

I'm pretty easy to find over there. Same profile picture and everything (I think it still might be rainbow colored though.)

The problem is, I am not confident enough to post there the same way I do here. At all. I lurk. It's only been within the last few months that I've even started "liking" posts (since people can see whatever you like). The atmosphere there is totally different in a not good way.

I'll take Ploos over FB, bugs and all, until the point it folds. My people are here, not there.

  18. Angie Person November 20, 2015 at 10:07 pm #

Me too +Sarah Rios, although the mass exodus of Plussers is making me consider checking the share settings and such.

  19. Bliss Morgan November 20, 2015 at 10:08 pm #

I am going to friend you over there right now. The name is different, but the userpic is the same.

  20. Jim “Danger” Hanson November 20, 2015 at 10:09 pm #

That's pretty much the way I feel, but I'm worried at this point that I've lost so many people here that that's why I'm pulling my emergency brake now, while I can still find most of you, should the wheels fall off this bus at the speed it looks like they are starting to fall off.

  21. Lexi Gable (Keeper LeFae) November 20, 2015 at 11:50 pm #

I'm not very active on FB right now, because I need to find a working timeline filter again to make it even remotely bearable, but I did send a friend request. For now, I'm still holding on to the classic design while it lasts. I gave the new design a try, and I just couldn't do it. The horrendous aesthetics aside, the overall lack of functionality to be able to continue to use G+ the way I've been using it since early Beta… yeah… Anyway, don't ever be a stranger, Jim.

  22. K.B. Burnfield November 21, 2015 at 12:06 am #

Yeah— I've been here since the beta days a dim not sure what's up with google's attitude toward G+.

This update sure doesn't feel like an update.

Circles never worked. They were good to share something to an interested group but not for reading a commonly interesting group on a topic — communities started working on this and I think collections continues it.

I use circles to make sure I don't miss posts from specific people but nothing more.

I won't be going over to fb. I don't have a personal fb account and never will.

If G+ folds I'll have to go back to finding forums online for my interests.

  23. Bronwyn McGuckin November 21, 2015 at 12:29 am #

It's funny but I think we might have met through mutual parties on plus before we met in person and I had no idea who you were lol.

But I'm going to miss you here :(

  24. Jason Dunstan November 21, 2015 at 12:48 am #

NOOOO!! How will you avoid the brain-dead fascist religious kook redneck townies from your hometown now?

Well, that's how it is for me, anyway. Your mileage may vary.

  25. Melina M November 21, 2015 at 1:03 am #

Just to let you know, if you go to the settings in the app (at least the Android version and I assume iOS is the same), you can check the box to enable Display Circle Streams. Then you'll get a selfish in the left navigation bar which mercifully shows all your circles and you can easily filter by circle. That was my big complaint with the app too, but since a friend pointed out that trick to me it's almost perfect now.

  26. Steve Kunzer November 21, 2015 at 1:51 am #

I prefer collections and think they should have had them at the start, but you can view by circle… it just takes extra steps.

However… your observation is accurate in my opinion. They think that once they've got you, they've got you, and they care far more about numbers than having a loyal user base. But then they're a large corporation, why would we expect them to.

I love Google+ Not it's look or feel, not it's functionality, nothing Googleish about it, Just the interesting people. On here I find the kind of interesting intelligent posts and debate that I never ever saw on Facebook (who, incidentally, are a large corporation that only care about numbers too).

I'm not sure I can bring myself to sign up to Facebook again (deleted my account a few years ago). If you do go +Jim Hanson please try popping back in from time to time. Facebook is as wretched a hive of scum and villany as you've ever seen, and all the nice people are here! (I might be a little biased of course).

Agreed +Jim Hanson , I have a couple circles that I checked for content every day. With the new layout, I really miss it.

Are we still doing taping for CFP here?

  30. Jenny e (Kismet) November 21, 2015 at 10:57 am #

I found circle you just have go settings and select it.

  31. Hilary Hatch (ImpChan) November 22, 2015 at 6:37 pm #

+Jim Hanson You can display circle streams in navigation by going to the settings and clicking a checkbox.

  32. Andre La Barre November 28, 2015 at 6:49 pm #

+Jim Hanson The preview has been updated with a setting to navigate by circles. Once the setting is toggled on, circles are displayed in the menu on the left. Overall it feels cramped on my small monitor, but the functionality is there again so I'm less upset.

Doh. +Hilary Hatch may have beat me to it. Did I mention "cramped"?
